01

Create an expected-result queue

A clinic cannot identify a missing result unless it knows what should have arrived.

  • Record the order, patient, ordering clinician, test, destination, and expected timeframe.
  • Assign responsibility for monitoring overdue results.
  • Reconcile received results against the expected list.
  • Escalate missing or unmatched results through a defined process.
02

Review with context

A result should reach the clinician with the patient history and current plan visible.

  • Confirm identity and completeness.
  • Route to the responsible clinician and record review status.
  • Document interpretation, decision, and any additional work.
  • Prioritize urgent or abnormal findings according to clinic policy.
03

Communicate and close

Opening a result is not the same as completing follow-up.

  • Record when, how, and by whom the patient was informed.
  • Document plan changes, orders, education, and questions.
  • Create assigned tasks for unresolved actions.
  • Schedule the next clinical checkpoint and audit unclosed results.
